SYNOPSIS

Kate Kreissl, Greg Beam, and Matt Doxtad in All This Murky Green
Kate Mortimer as Liz, Greg Beam as Dennis, and Matt Doxtad as Roger share a tender moment in All This Murky Green.
All This Murky Green, the first major production by Chicago-based production house Harmony Joyride Productions, is a 40-minute DV short about an inept crime-solving club. The main character, Dennis (Greg Beam), applies for a job at Clifford Electronics, a local electronics store owned and operated by the eccentric, sports-metaphor-prone Joseph Clifford (Peter Ferry). Clifford hires Dennis and invites him over to his house that same evening to "meet the rest of the team." Upon arrival, Dennis is introduced to the team, a motley crew of social misfits - including the anachronistic Buffalo Bill (Thom Sigsby) and the sinister Viper (Dwight Sora) - who gather at Clifford's every evening after work to solve low-level crimes and eat low-quality pie. After a confusing initiation ceremony, a befuddled Dennis is sent out to "patrol the neighborhood" with Tariq (Brian Vasquez), a portly co-worker. After stopping a home invasion (kind of) and saving Tariq's life (kind of), Dennis is afforded a hero's welcome upon his arrival at work the next day. He soon intuits that the secret to success at Clifford Electronics lies not in TV sales figures but in mysteries-solved figures.

Dwight Sora and Greg Beam in All This Murky Green
Dwight Sora as The Viper threatens Greg Beam as Dennis in All This Murky Green.
Against his will, Dennis starts spending all his free time solving mysteries with the Clifford's crew, to the consternation of his long-suffering artist girlfriend, Liz (Kate Mortimer) and his genial roommate, Roger (Matt Doxtad). After an ultimatum from Liz that he "had better be at her art opening tomorrow night, or else," Dennis ditches the team to attend the opening. But they find Dennis anyway, and, as a sort of punishment, trash the art opening, to the utter horror of Liz, Dennis, and local art critic Professor McLowry (Mike Ferrin). After Liz loudly breaks up with him in public the next day, Dennis tells Clifford off and quits the job. But hell hath no fury like a crime-solving club scorned, as Dennis discovers when wakes up the next morning and finds a microphone hidden in his kitchen. This turns out to be just the tip of the iceberg, as the crime-solving team turns its resources entirely on Dennis, stalking him relentlessly. At his wit's end, losing sleep and hair, Dennis seems to be utterly defeated - until he decides to strike back.

All This Murky Green is directed by Tim Ferrin and Ryan Wolff from a script by Justin Peters. It was shot on a Canon-XL1s miniDV cam in July 2004 in and around Chicago. A final cut will be ready for screening by early spring 2005.
